Madonna's bid to adopt a four-year-old girl from Malawi has been put on hold by the court.
The pop star launched an appeal after her attempt to get legal custody of Mercy James was rejected, because the singer is not a resident of the African country.
Madonna's lawyers argued residence is only a factor which is taken into account when the child's welfare and best interests are being considered.
They claim to make it a dominant factor is to displace the main area of concern.
But on Monday, the country's Supreme Court of Appeal adjourned the case indefinitely.
Malawi's government was accused of giving Madonna special treatment when it allowed her to adopt David Banda in 2006.
