EIGHT young North Shore musicians are semi-finalists in the 2009 NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition.
Individual semi-finalists are violinist Harry Ward of Killara, oboist Sarah Young of Killara, pianist Paula Lu of Ravenswood, and violinist Arne Tripolone of Lane Cove.
Those who are competing in the multiples section are violist Ashley Agar of Pymble, violist Daisy Barnes of Pymble, and cellists Chester To of Wahroonga and Julian Yin of Gordon.
Harry Ward is competing in the individual junior section as well as the multiple section.
They are among 20 semi-finalists selected from 110 individual entrants and will perform on Saturday at the Ravenswood Centenary Music Centre, Gordon.
Adjudicators of the first-round auditions Rachel Valler, Rachel Scott and Rachel Tolmie commented on the very high standard of the 110 entrants.
“We were most impressed by the huge amount of talent and in awe of the bravery of these young people, not to mention their dedication and poise,” they said.
The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra has organised the competition for more than 25 years and this year there are a record number of entrants. It is a showcase for local talent and rising stars.
